POWER TOOL PROJECT
Context
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many countries were/continue to be placed under some form of lockdown or restriction of movement. This has caused a rapid and sizeable increase in demand for home improvement and furnishing products as people concentrate on improving their home environments.
Brief
I was asked to select 1 form of battery-operated power tool and then present 3 concepts of this tool to my design lead early on in the project so they were able to help steer me, and decide which concept they would like me to develop and bring to market. I was expected to study the brand of the product and ensure that my design fits into the company's range of products.

Development



Early on in the design process I found it was important to get the handle size and dimensions to be as comfortable as possible. This became my primary focus and I built my design from here.

Blender
Initial refinement was done using Blender as I was able to quickly develop and play with forms, adjusting the bevel and fillets of sections with ease.

ADVANCED VENTILATION
The HAGANE Drive Gear is produced by Shimano’s cold-forging technology, without the need for additional machining. This delivers a long-lasting smoothness, strength, lightness and power at the very heart of the saw. Traditional die-cast, machined gears are less durable under heavy loads.
A 3 Switch Combination which allows for different laser colours and gives the option for an add on torch which can be fitted onto the saw for when working in darker conditions.
CI4+ is an advanced version of the original CI4. This highly technical material is 2.5 times stiffer than CI4 and is used on many high-end Shimano products to increase weight savings. Use of CI4+ for the body and rotor also delivers remarkable stiffness for better efficiency.
Inner mesh within housing allows for advanced cooling of brushless motor whilst limiting intake of dust and debris.

Secare DNA




Building on its iconic status, secare has been through an evolutionary re-design with a new range of technologies. These developments are a work of engineering genius and touch just about every part of the saw including the gearing, laser focus and precise adjustment settings. They are developments that will make the product more efficient, more effective and ultimately more enjoyable. SHIMANO calls it ‘Infinity Evolution’… but to wood workers across the world, it will be known simply as Secare.
